Turks and Caicos Islands in a week - Take 1

December 1st, 2009

I’m going to take you through my week long work-holiday on Grace Bay Beach along with site visits, dining experiences and overall impressions of my short but sweet stay on what I consider to be the best of the newest (developed) Caribbean islands! Each week I will post my adventures and findings for each day on island.

Flying from the West coast you can chose to take a red-eye or overnight in one of many airport hotels. I chose to overnight at an airport hotel (the Sheraton right in the airport terminal, provided immediate check-in for the next day flight). A quick check-in the following morning and less than 4 hours later I can see the Turquoise sea!  On landing in Providenciales I felt a warm welcome and a sense of ease and relaxation almost immediately.  I walked through security with thoughts of the beach, spa and cool cocktails waiting for me poolside and on exiting the small and very crowded airport we met out resort rep and hopped on the shuttle for a quick 15 minute drive to The Regent Palms.

I was welcomed by the GM, Monica and several staff members who I have built a relationship with over my years of sending clients their way…now it was my turn to enjoy! A fruity punch and cool towel in hand we walk, no glide to my 1 Bedroom Oceanfront Suite and complete check-in, in-suite, no waiting in the reception area (they think of everything!) Suitcases laid out, beachwear on top…I am already at the pool bar with a cocktail in hand and gazing out to the perfect beach setting within an hour of landing. This is how life should be, relaxed, luxurious and most of all fun!

We took a 5 minute taxi ride to the large IGA grocery store nearby and bought some supplies for the next few days. It is stocked with everything you can find back home as most items are shipped in from the US. The taxi ride costs $30 return. Throughout the week it seemed most taxi rides, no matter where we went was around $15 for 2 people.

The weather in Turks and Caicos is almost always perfect, at 80oF/27oC (having come from 50oF/10oC) and the sounds of the waves lapping on the beach were just what I needed to hear. A strong storm had been brewing further north in the Caribbean Sea and we did get some strong winds and waves reaching a whopping 1foot but only for the first 2 days which were quite pleasant as it brought a cooling breeze during the hot afternoons.

Not wanting to venture far, we ordered room service for dinner (Steak and a Mahi Mahi) and were pleasantly surprised by the fast service and delectable food. My colleague then set off to his resort (Villa Renaissance) while I set up my laptop for some last minute emails at the very handy desk in the living area. With the living area doors open to the ocean, I sat listening to the waves for along while until sleep set in at which point I laid down to rest in the large comfortable bed knowing I was in good hands for the next 3 days here.
